Nearly three quarters of all goods transported across Europe by land are moved by road.
Over eight billion Euros worth of truck cargo are stolen in Europe each year.
The trucks left unprotected during the drivers' mandatory rest periods are easy prey for criminals and they constitute a threat for security of all motorists. Sufficent number of safe and secure TPAs are needed in order to alleviate the burden on parking for car drivers.
50 TPAs in 11 European countries were tested for the first time in the framework of the EuroTest programme. Only two TPAs scored the top marks in both aspects - security and services. More than a quarter of tested TPAs could not be rated due to missing standards. Overall, the TPAs scored worse in security aspect than in services.
A conference organised by the European Commission and the Belgian Presidency dedicated to TPAs will be held on 25-26 October 2010 in Brussels.
