"With EuroTAP, the automobile clubs have created an instrument that makes sure law does not stay law on paper alone, but is turned into action. This is actively improving tunnel safety on major European highways," Reinhard Rack, MEP, May 2007 To highlight the achievements of EuroTAP (European Tunnel Assessment Programme) and recognise the excellence achieved by some in road tunnel safety, the European Tunnel Award for the safest Tunnels in Europe will be presented to the winning tunnels in front of an international audience of policymakers, stakeholders and the media. The newly launched interactive EuroTAP Audit Report and brochure will be presented at the event together witht the new EuroTAP film, in front of an audience of national Ministers, European Parliamentarians, the European Commission, Automobile clubs, national experts and press. The final EuroTAP Audit Report highlights Europe's best and worst tunnels tested over a three year period in 18 countries and reveals that one-fifth of all 152 tunnels tested actually failed. Italy and Norway score particularly badly in this respect. Despite the state of the art facilities found in the award winning tunnels, the audit report reveals the continuing need for improvements to tunnel safety. Automobile clubs argue optimal road infrastructure plays a crucial role in minimizing road deaths and serious injuries. Despite road tunnels reducing congestion, improving traffic flow and often offering safer transit, accidents in their confined spaces can reach catastrophic proportions. The EuroTAP programme was developed by the German Automobile Club ADAC together with their 11 partner automobile clubs, and the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile). The programme is operated in 11 countries including Croatia, Switzerland, and Norway from outside the EU. Participating automobile clubs include ADAC (Germany) The AA (United Kingdom) ACI (Italy), AMZS (Slovenia), ANWB (Netherlands), HAK, Croatia, NAF, (Norway), OEAMTC, Austria, RACC (Spain) RACE (Spain), Touring (Belgium). Together with the FIA in Brussels, these automobile clubs represent some 34 million road users in Europe. EuroTAP has been realised with support from the European Commission. EuroTAP has successfully examined the safety and quality of over 150 major road tunnels important for TransEuropean traffic with the findings published annually in the media Europe wide. EuroTAP looks forward to welcoming you! Please find the event programme below:
