The latest test brought to light many significant differences in
quality. Only two car rental agencies were given a rating
of "Very good". In contrast to this, seven agencies were given a rating of "Very poor" with cars that were no longer fit to be on the road. Five cars were returned with a rating of "Poor".
All in all, every fifth rental agency failed to make the grade. But
there is also good news to report: 32 car rental agencies and hence
more than half of all the candidates tested were given a respectable
rating of "Good". 14 agencies were found to be "Acceptable".
It was disappointing, however, that this test failed to show any
improvements compared to previous years. (continue here)

Methodology - The heart of the Car Hire Test: Requirements, experts, approach
For the third time in succession, the EuroTest partner clubs tested car

Spain and to two non-EU countries, Croatia and Turkey. All the holiday
destinations were chosen on the basis of their importance for tourism,
the number of rental agencies on site and the frequency of car rentals.

But anybody wanting to drive really safely at low cost should not simply accept the first offer available. It makes sense to compare prices and to watch out for hidden costs. (continue here)

Child seats in hired cars: Not an option at many rental agencies
For many travellers, a holiday means less stress, more freedom - and fewer rules. But when it comes to trips with a hired car, those in search of relaxation should be on their guard. Especially if they have children with them. Even if they spontaneously decide to hire a car for a trip they will need suitable child seats that are fully functional. According to the German Insurance Association, unrestrained children have a seven times higher risk of being seriously injured or killed in a car accident than children who are restrained.
