Pedestrian crossings in Europe need significant improvement

Press Release

Each year, more than 8,000 pedestrians are killed in the road accidents across Europe. Almost one out of four happens on a pedestrian crossing.

The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) European Bureau calls for a minimum standardisation of markings, traffic lights and traffic signs on pedestrian crossings which is needed in order to improve the worst situations existing in a number of countries throughout Europe. Results - main findings

In many European countries pedestrian fatalities have showed an increasing trend, in spite of an improving overall road safety figures. This is why the commitment of the EuroTest partners on pedestrian safety was for the second year focussed on the assessment of these critical intersections between pedestrians and vehicles. Methodology: How we tested

The high number of pedestrians killed in road accidents in Europe pushed the ACI and its partner to start an assessment programme focussed on pedestrian crossings. As usual, in the EuroTEST activities along with awareness campaign addressed to pedestrians and drivers, a methodology was developed aimed at assessing the safety levels of single pedestrian crossings. City Dossiers

310 pedestrian crossings in 31 European cities covering different types of crossings have been tested looking at the crossings system, accessibility, daytime and night time visibility.

Signalised pedestrian crossings

Pedestrian crossings equipped with traffic lights for pedestrians usually supposed to be safer than those non-signalized.
Indeed, this is true only when the different phases are fine-tuned so that on one side the largest possible number of people can cross safely and on the other side the vehicles have to wait as little as possible. (continue here)

Recommendations

Pedestrian Crossings Awareness Campaign

Together with the pedestrian crossings assessment activities, an awareness campaign has been prepared. Following the experience of the "Walk safe" leaflet, created in 2008, an educational video has been conceived and developed. Today the educational video produced in four languages (Italian, English, French and German) has been launched in order to address both, pedestrians and drivers behaviours, in their sharing of the road space among each other.

The Roadmap to Road Safety 2020

The importance of pedestrian crossings for the safety of road users in general and pedestrians in particular is also highlighted in the newly released "Roadmap to Road Safety 2020" of the FIA Eurocouncil. FIA's strategy paper presents the European motoring and touring clubs' common vision of road safety action for the next decade. The paper also draws a special attention to the training and education of road users, in particular the most vulnerable ones such as pedestrians, children and seniors as well as to a vehicle design protecting pedestrians in case of an accident. This together with the education and improvements of design and maintenance of pedestrian crossings shall be the major goals in the future.
